WGE assisted Westpac in achieving their first 6 star rating for Green Star Interiors accreditation for the fit-out of their North Sydney branch. Westpac is ranked as a global leader in corporate sustainability in many respected international indices. The Westpac North Sydney branch achieved a 60% improvement in energy consumption – 20% more than the targeted reduction in energy consumed by tenancy lighting for the average 5 star projects.
WGE’s ESD team helped Westpac to identify the most suitable store to target for the rating, outlined an appropriate strategy which included follow up from construction, document collation and liaison with the GBCA and stakeholders.
Energy efficient equipment with Australian best practice Energy Star ratings were selected (such as LED lighting), along with precisely controlled and monitored HVAC systems to guarantee appropriate CO2 concentrations in the fit-out with minimal energy use. All systems are connected to a dedicated energy metering system, so that consumption can be monitored and maintained at optimal levels.
A high level of internal air quality was achieved via the installation of 45+ indoor plants, the use of low- VOC and formaldehyde emission materials, and a CO2 monitoring system ensures Carbon Dioxide levels are maintained below appropriate caps within the premises during operational hours.
To obtain the 6 Star rating, the WGE Sustainability team raised the bar beyond benchmarks previously established for the 5 Star Westpac branches. The team liaised with the landlord to seek a commitment to reduce waste from end-of-life interiors, tackled the high noise levels in the surrounding areas with acoustic design, and managed the amount of construction and demolition landfill waste to below the Australian standard rate.
