Recognising WGE’s heritage expertise, the structural team was appointed by the Heritage Council of WA to assess and safeguard historic buildings damaged in the 2010 earthquake.

WGE provided on the ground guidance on how government funding was to be allocated, assessing damaged listed buildings into the following three categories, restore, repair or rebuild. Included in any recommendation for fund allocation was the provision for upgrades required to ensure building compliance with current design practices, whilst maintaining as many historic features as possible.

A few sites were too badly damaged and demolition was recommended however many significant historic buildings were recommended to be restored to their former glory including the:

  • Metropole and Albion hotels
  • Former Commercial Bank building
  • 39 Burt Street
  • Boulder Town Hall
  • Cornwall Hotel
  • St Joseph’s Convent
  • Queen’s Church

WGE’s structural team continued to be involved in many of the building restorations, with the most recent project, Cornwall Hotel, nearing completion in early 2017.
