Completion year 2018
The Cottesloe pylon is a Perth landmark and heritage listed. Wood & Grieve Engineers originally provided technical advisor, structural design and Superintendent roles during refurbishment works in 1996 & 2009 which was limited to the reinstatement of the spike. Public safety became a priority concern in 2017 as a result of significant erosion below the water level, leading to reconstruction works in 2018.
WGE was commissioned to design and document two alternative restoration design solutions, to create a performance brief for a D&C contractor and undertake the Superintendent role during the construction works.
The heritage-listed pylon needed a structural solution to maximise the preservation of the original fabric whilst addressing the imminent safety concerns, environmental constraints and practical construction considerations.
Both precast module and in-situ grouting solutions were developed and documented. Durability was a primary concern, which informed the need for concrete-enhancing admixtures and stainless steel reinforcement. WGE worked closely with the specialist marine contractor to overcome plant and equipment access limitations.
