Bilya Koort Boodja is the new centre for Nyoongar culture and environmental knowledge in the heart of Northam, sharing and conserving the rich Aboriginal heritage for the surrounding communities and visitors to the area. The dynamic structure sits above the flood plain and includes exhibition and meeting space, welcome landings, immersive learning areas, offices and amenities. Our hydraulic and fire services design for the development helped produce a sleek and seamless integration into the landscape.
Overlooking the surging Avon River on a known floodplain, the centre required careful consideration around stormwater design. Solutions focused around discharge locations and heights above flood levels, selecting gutter spouts over traditional downpipes for the effective removal of rainwater from the built form. To sympathetically reflect the natural simplicity of the architectural design and materials selection, service connections with the environment were concealed wherever possible.
