Sandy originally joined WGE in 1995 as a graduate, working in the mechanical and civil disciplines before leaving to practice coastal engineering for 7 years then lobbying for a year. She rejoined WGE in 2003 as a civil engineer in the Perth office. In 2008 she became civil training coordinator, and in 2010 was appointed National Training Coordinator across all disciplines.

What will you bring to a project

To me, training and knowledge sharing are crucial drivers for motivated, educated and more highly skilled staff, and through this, better service for our clients. I am a believer that training seeks behavioural change and lasting behavioural change comes about only when an individual is highly motivated to make that change. My passion for ongoing learning brings enthusiasm and a genuine concern to achieve the best possible result for all parties.

With a flair for communication, empathy and problem solving, my exposure to many branches of engineering makes me ideally suited to understanding and addressing the training and education needs of our varied staff. Training ranges from tailoring individual solutions to developing and delivering company-wide strategies.

Outside work

When not at WGE Sandy can be found indulging a passion for music – singing in two bands, writing original songs and absorbing the local band scene. She practices Feldenkrais, an approach to the mind and body based on paying attention to your organisation and integration and learning ways to change the habits of a lifetime. Sandy is also addicted to the gym and her latest vice, the Thermomix.

Previous projects

Project Engineer Program – At WGE, the role of Project Engineer is unique, crucial and demanding. We have in place a company-wide program delivering training to those staff recently appointed to the Project Engineer level or anticipated to soon be promoted to introduce them to the range of responsibilities they will face. Training is also delivered to the full group of Project Engineers on topical, current issues.

Cross-Discipline Awareness Program – While it is not necessary to be an expert in all disciplines, a good awareness of the issues faced is important to have. To best gain awareness of disciplines other than one’s own, a program is in place across a range of topics to broaden knowledge across the board. This is designed to align with our Talent Development Program.

Company Wide Programs – From time to time WGE rolls out broad training programs to our staff. Topics range from new thinking on consulting skills and contract law, to new software programs being implemented throughout WGE.

Access to Training Records – Training histories with WGE are maintained on our Human Resources database. Staff can view their individual training records via a viewing portal. For those building Continuing Professional Development records, this is of great assistance.

Individual Training Requirements – We recognise that each person at WGE is unique, with different backgrounds, natural skills, education, and exposure to situations – both technical and non-technical (soft or consulting skills). Therefore, where a skill gap is identified for an individual we explore appropriate solutions. Options may include internal means – working alongside one of our more highly skilled staff or an internal workshop – or an external course or consultant.
